the backstory

Kominka Workshop is a project by A.I.R. Myoko co-founder Liam Mugavin, and the flagship project of his design practice, Transfer Studio.

A 170-year-old kominka (farmhouse), was carefully dismantled, relocated, and reimagined as a contemporary ski chalet in Myoko. The project brings together the warmth, character, and craftsmanship of vernacular Japanese architecture with modern design, construction, and comfort. The house was relocated from within the other side of Mt. Myoko.

Built for a harsh winter climate, the house features a high-performance building envelope designed for passive thermal efficiency, durability, and year-round comfort.

The result is a thoughtful new approach to kominka relocation — balancing cultural continuity with contemporary living, energy performance, and aesthetic exploration.
